FAQ

What is Metal Wear Debris with Hip Replacement?
Hip replacement surgeries are a common procedure in the United States. More than ever, younger patients are undergoing hip replacement surgeries, and this has prompted manufacturers of artificial joints to innovate new hip implants that are more durable and have a longer lifespan. While improvements have been made to increase the safety and effectiveness of this surgery, some hip implant designs have resulted in an increase of complications for patients.

Typically built from ceramic, plastic, or metal, hip implant systems come in several forms, and there are hundreds of different hip devices on the market. The type of device that works best for one patient may not be the ideal choice for another, and some companies offer modular systems that can be custom-fitted to suit the unique needs of the individual patient.

In the last couple of decades, metal-on-metal implants became more popular on the market. Manufacturers claimed that the metal components of these devices have a longer lifespan than other design options, and the durable nature of the material would stand up to the more active lifestyle of the younger hip replacement patient. Unfortunately, these implants have resulted in a greatly increased risk of failure and serious health complications, including metallosis (metal poisoning).

The Risk of Metal Poisoning with Hip Implant Systems
In a total hip replacement, the femoral head, stem, and socket are replaced with artificial hip implants. In a metal-on-metal hip system, all of the components of the device are made from metal that typically contains cobalt and chromium. Through the natural movement of the joint, the femoral head and socket rub together to create friction. This friction can lead to the wearing away of the device and release metal debris into the joint space.
As these cobalt and chromium ions are dislodged into the joint, the patient may experience severe pain, swelling, and decreased mobility. Some of the metal debris particles can also enter into the bloodstream – creating the dangerous condition known as metallosis.

Symptoms of metal poisoning in hip replacement patients include:

• Heart issues – including heart failure
• Changes in cognitive thinking and metal state
• Visual or auditory impairment
• Nerve and thyroid issues
• Infection
• Loosening of the joint
• Osteolysis and tissue necrosis

When a patient develops metallosis from the metal debris of a hip implant, revision surgery is necessary to correct the problem and remove the device. This type of surgery is generally more complex and risky than the original hip replacement, and patients can experience further complications as a result of the operation.

In response to the growing concern over metal-on-metal hip implant systems, the FDA has issued safety warnings concerning this type of device. Additionally, several major manufacturers have recalled or discontinued their metal hip implants, and they are now faced with thousands of lawsuits from patients who were injured as a result of these devices.
