FAQ
DePuy ASR
DePuy Orthopedics is a division of Johnson & Johnson, and this major company is responsible for over 200 different artificial joint products. A large portion of DePuy’s sales come from their hip replacement systems. In a response to the needs of younger patients seeking durable hip replacement implants, DePuy has released several types of metal-on-metal implant systems.
DePuy’s metal-on-metal systems included the Pinnacle Hip Replacement System, the ASR XL Acetabular System, and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System. These products were heavily marketed to the younger demographic of hip replacement patients, and the company claimed that the durable nature of the material would withstand high-impact, active lifestyles.

Unfortunately, the reality of metal-on-metal devices did not live up to the claims of the company. Instead of having a longer lifespan and lower failure rates, the DePuy ASR systems performed poorly in post-market research. Thousands of patients who received the devices reported serious side effects from the metal implants and a greatly increased risk of revision surgery to repair or replace the device.
Recalls and Litigation for the DePuy ASR
Studies done by The National Joint Registry of England and Wales revealed alarming statistics regarding the failure rate of DePuy ASR systems. In fact, data showed that within five years of receiving the ASR XL implant, 13% of patients required revision surgery. Similar data was received for the ASR resurfacing system, with a 12% failure rate within five years.

In addition to the high failure rate associated with DePuy ASR hip systems, the following serious complications have been reported by patients who received these implants:
• Loosening of the artificial hip implant
• Metallosis
• Bone fracture within the joint
• Dislocation and misalignment of the device
• Decreased mobility
• Increased pain, swelling, and inflammation

In many cases, patients who received an ASR implant were forced to undergo revision surgery to replace the device. Besides failure of the device, the primary cause of revision surgery with these hip systems is metallosis, or metal poisoning. When the metal components of the ASR System rub against each other, the friction releases metal ions into the space surrounding the joint. These ions can then travel to the blood stream and produce a toxic level of metal in the blood and severe swelling and pain within the joint.
Numerous lawsuits were filed against DePuy by patients who experienced pain and complications from the ASR implants. While thousands of lawsuits are still in litigation, two major class action settlements have been reached. The first settlement, reached in November of 2013, was worth an estimated amount of $4 billion.
