FAQ

Cormet Hip Resurfacing System
There are several types of hip replacement surgery, and hip resurfacing is a popular option for younger, more active patients. A total hip replacement joint only averages a 15 to 20 year lifespan, and more than ever younger patients are undergoing hip replacement procedures. For those that are more active than traditional patients and expected to outlive the lifespan of standard artificial joints, hip resurfacing may be an effective way to increase their quality of life.

The increasingly younger demographic of hip replacement patients has led to manufacturers developing products geared towards a more active lifestyle. One such product is the metal on metal hip implant. This device is made from cobalt and chromium, and it is marketed towards the younger patient as being more durable and long-lasting than traditional ceramic or plastic implants.

The Cormet Hip Resurfacing System was one of the products that used this metal on metal technology within the device. Instead of replacing the entire hip joint, this system allows the surgeon to remove minimal amounts of bone before installing a metal femoral cap and metal pelvic cup. Originally approved by the FDA in 2007, the Cormet System was created by Corin Group and distributed in the United States by Stryker Orthopedics.

Risks of a Metal on Metal Hip Implant System
Like other metal on metal hip devices, the Cormet Hip Resurfacing System has come under scrutiny in the last several years. One of the biggest risks to patients with this device is the potential of metal poisoning, or metallosis. As the metal liner and cup move against each other within the joint, small metal fragments can flake off and enter the blood stream. This can have devastating health consequences in patients, and hip revision surgery is often necessary to correct the issue.

Additional complications reported with the Cormet Hip System and other metal on metal devices include the following:

• Severe pain in the hip, leg, or groin
• Loosening and dislocation of the hip joint
• Device failure or breakage
• Excessive swelling and inflammation
• Decreased mobility
• Tissue damage and bone loss

The risk of revision surgery is alarmingly high for those that have a metal on metal hip implant device. Data reported in 2011 by the National Joint Registry of England and Wales showed that within one year of surgery this type of metal hip system required revision twice as often as other non-metal hip implants.

In response to the growing concern over the safety of metal on metal devices, Stryker announced in 2011 that they would no longer be distributing the Cormet hip resurfacing system. In the announcement, they claimed that the device no longer fit with their long-term product strategy. While there has not been an official recall of the Cormet hip system, patients that suffered serious side effects from the device have filed lawsuits against the manufacturer.
