FAQ

Conserve Plus Total Resurfacing Hip System
Hip replacement surgeries are a common procedure in the United States with over 377,000 performed every year. There are a number of reasons why a patient chooses to undergo this major surgery, and osteoarthritis is a leading cause of hip replacements. Although statistics show that older individuals make up the majority of these patients, younger people requiring a hip replacement are becoming much more common. In response to the needs of a younger population, major manufacturers continue to create innovative new hip replacement devices that allow for a more active lifestyle.

Wright Medical is a leading manufacturer of joint replacements worldwide. Like many companies, they began to market new metal on metal hip systems in the early 2000’s that were geared towards younger hip replacement patients. One of these systems was the Conserve Plus Total Resurfacing Hip System.
Resurfacing systems were considered to be ideal for younger, more active individuals. Instead of replacing the entire hip with an artificial joint, the resurfacing system is comprised of a metal femoral cap and metal cup. This allows the surgeon to conserve more of the bone within the hip joint by only needing to remove a few centimeters of the femoral head. Despite the claims of the manufacturer marketing the safety of the Conserve Plus system, numerous complaints have been reported by patients who suffered adverse effects from the device.

Complications Associated with the Conserve Plus System
Over the last several years, many manufactures have faced recalls and lawsuits concerning metal on metal devices. Although marketed to be more durable than traditional hip replacement implants, these devices have a high failure rate and cause an increased risk of post-op complications.
The most common issues associated with the Conserve resurfacing system include:

• Severe hip, leg, and groin pain
• Loosening of the hip joint
• Device failure
• Metallosis
• Increased risk of revision surgery
• Decreased mobility
• Allergic reactions
• Swelling and inflammation

While thousands of the Conserve Plus implants have been used in the United States since its release, the FDA has received hundreds of reports of side effects from patients. The most frequent complaints of patients include metal poisoning (metallosis), severe pain, and joint failure. In many of these cases, patients had to undergo hip revision surgery – a complex, painful procedure.

Despite the numerous reports of side effects and the documented issues of metal on metal hip implants, Conserve Plus has yet to be recalled by the manufacturer. Instead, the metal on metal implant now carries a lengthy list of contraindications and is not recommended for use in women. Although a recall has not been issued, many patients have filed lawsuits against Wright Medical for the damages incurred due to the metal on metal resurfacing system.
