FAQ
After Hip Replacement Surgery (in the Hospital)
After making the decision to have hip replacement surgery, many patients have questions about their impending hospital stay and the recovery process that is involved after the surgery. While a hip replacement is a major medical procedure, advancements in medicine have increased the safety and effectiveness of a total hip replacement. In some cases, surgeons may even be able to perform the hip replacement through minimally-invasive surgical means.
The length of time that patients will stay in the hospital after a hip replacement varies depending upon the patient’s age, medical conditions, and type of surgery that is performed. In some cases, patients may be able to be discharged after one to three days, but other patients stay for up to five days after the procedure. Regardless of the length of time you are in the hospital, the focus during this time period is to effectively manage post-op pain and begin the rehabilitation process.
What can Patients Expect During the Hospital Stay?
Hip replacement surgery may require the use of an epidural or spinal block. This limits the patient’s ability to ambulate immediately following the procedure. However, patients are quickly transitioned to using narcotic pain medications to manage pain, and walking becomes an important aspect of recovery starting the day after surgery. Most patients experience minimal pain after eight to 12 weeks of recovery.

Early ambulation has been shown to be helpful in reducing blood clots in hip replacement patients, and it sets the stage for quicker long-term recovery. Patients will need assistance with walking in the early stages of recovery, and a walker is typically prescribed for use at home after discharge.
During the stay in the hospital, a physical therapist will work with the patient to begin gentle exercises and increase independence. Skills that the therapist will work on in this stage include:
• Getting dressed
• Using the bathroom independently
• Gentle exercise routines
• Bathing
• Ambulation
Many patients are eager to bathe after surgery, and the doctor will provide details on when this is allowed. In some cases, the incisions should not get wet for up to a week after surgery, but more surgeons are now using water-proof dressings that allow for earlier showering and bathing.
After pain is effectively managed and the patient is able to take short walks, discharge from the hospital will be discussed. An essential part of a successful recovery is having the appropriate assistance during the early weeks that the patient is home. This often involves home health aides and the use of adaptive devices that make life easier for the patient.
Typically a patient cannot drive for up to six weeks following surgery, and they will need assistance with getting to post-op follow-up appointments after returning home. There will likely be several other restrictions placed on the patient by the surgeon, and it is essential that the timeframes are followed to avoid damaging the hip and causing further complications.
